This is a two-day course designed to give engineering/geoscience firm managers the specific tools and skills they need to manage performance and ensure their employees' ongoing commitment to superior results.
Today's workplace asks managers and supervisors to "coach" their employees. This is a course that teaches them how, so that they can do what is asked to of them, and do it well.
"This was great! This was the first management course directed solely at
engineers, and it made a huge difference. The course was logically presented
and there was a good balance between lectures and workshops."
Mark Rigolo, P.Eng., Ballard Power Systems |
Course Content
This is a highly practical course which teaches the four specific components of coaching - confronting, mentoring, tutoring and counselling.
- Confronting (Performance Improvement)
Challenging an employee to do something differently or to take the next step
- Counselling (Problem Solving)
Solving any type of performance related problem
- Mentoring
Helping an employee learn to develop their career and how to function effectively within the organization
- Tutoring
Helping an employee acquire new job related knowledge or skills
Course Goals
- To show how coaching can contribute to employee commitment and sustained superior performance.
- To provide managers with a real-world model of coaching and coaching skills that they can use.
- To teach an easy to use process for coaching and to demonstrate the skills involved in each of the four types of coaching conversations.
- To allow participants to apply the process and skills in practice situations.
Correcting poor performance and performance related problems is a task most managers avoid because they don't know how to discuss problems effectively with employees. This course addresses this dilemma, and managers emerge with a step-by-step way to tackle this problem.
The course material can be immediately applied on-the-job. It is our aim to provide our clients with soft skills training that gets results. Managers manage better which improves the quality of work life for both employees, and their managers!

"The Coaching For Commitment course has proven to be a key tool
for staff mentoring and performance enhancement. Every professional
organization that wants to build strong staff support and project

"Westmar has been an active participant in Einblau's Coaching For Commitment course. We have sent our senior to middle-management staff to her two-day session over the past two years. In every instance these managers have found her course to be directly related to their day-to-day activities in directing the work of their teams. The lessons learned have opened lines of communication and developed strong team skills. Anyone responsible for supervising or managing project teams will find this course valuable.";
Stan Cowdell, P.Eng., President, Westmar |
"I have personally taken the Coaching For Commitment course offered by Einblau & Associates. In addition, Levelton Engineering Ltd. has sent its principals and senior managers. We have found the course material to be directly relevant and useful for our day-to-day management of staff for optimum performance. The course material is well presented, and the instructor is effective and entertaining. We would recommend it for those who must deal one-on-one with employees in difficult situations."
Neil Cumming, P.Eng., President, Levelton |
"My experience has shown me that the Coaching Course was extremely
valuable. Anyone can deal with issues that are positive, but
the Coaching Course has taught me how to deal with the kinds
of issues that are not positive and are often left to fester
as they are unpleasant to deal with."
Art McDonald, P.Eng., Keen |
A recent survey of 500 engineering firms confirmed that communication skills is the most critical skill set for managers and principals linked to long-term profitability and success. This course teaches two key communication skills:
- Coaching conversation skills, specifically: listening, open ended questioning, skills for obtaining good information and rapport building skills
- A sound step-by-step method for conducting coaching conversations with particular emphasis on how to have effective, results oriented, respectful corrective performance feedback conversations.
The course material can be applied on-the-job the next day. It is our aim to provide you with soft skills training that gets results.
